Hyperbolic coral reef

Hyperbolic coral reef

Saturday, 7 November
Pioneer Hall - MacCabe Park, 10am - 4pm

The Sydney Reef , A satellite of the worldwide Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project created by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring in Los Angeles.

Created by two Australians, The Coral Reef Project encompasses traditional craft, textile sculpture, environmental issues particularly the plight of coral reefs around the world and community activism. The Coral Reef Project has grown into a global art installation. The collective responsible for beginning the project in Australia is In Stitches; Claire Conroy, Michaela Davies and Charlotte Haywood.

The Sydney Reef has been presented at the Powerhouse Museum as part of the Ultimo Science Festival in August 2009. Crocheters from Wollongong participated in the Viva la Gong Festival workshop to contribute coral forms to the reef installation. See part of this beautiful sculptural installation at Viva la Gong Festival.
